Character & Canon: Hilda ; Pokémon (Games) District: Astralfield
Personality: First and foremost, as in all Pokemon games, Hilda is a "silent" protagonist. However, the NPCs of the game and the way that they speak to and about her give her a solid personality
Hilda is described as "a young girl with a lively style". She is a very determined and inspired girl who was taught never to give up. Even her name says it - in all languages, it has something to do with "battles" or "fighting". At the beginning of the game she starts out as a brand-new Pokemon trainer from Nuvema Town, with a dream to become to travel Unova and become the best trainer she can be. She starts her journey along with her two childhood friends Cheren and Bianca. While Bianca is a bit clumsy and easygoing and Cheren is very serious and firm, Hilda remains as the neutral party - easygoing, but serious when she needs to be. Throughout her Pokemon journey, she engages in friendly Pokemon battles with both of them to help each other get stronger. She helps Cheren realize that being the Champion of the Pokemon Leauge not only has to do with strength, but with the bond you share with your Pokemon, and she helps Bianca get stronger as a person and as a trainer.
However, the biggest changing factor to her personality and how she matures throughout the game is through N, the king of Team Plasma. When they first met, he introduced Hilda to his dream of a world where Pokemon and humans are separated. This gets her thinking, to the point where she admits she's curious about how Pokemon really feel about their trainers. She's previously thought that Pokemon were happy with people, so she's trying to see both sides of the argument. As time goes by and she finds out that N is the king of Team Plasma, she decides on disagreeing with him - Pokemon and humans are meant to live in harmony. At the end of the game, she helps N understand that you can accept both sides of an argument instead of rejecting them. Opinions and beliefs do not need to be forced upon others.
When Hilda and N meet in Mistralton City, he learns from her team that she is truly a kind trainer and that her Pokemon enjoy being under her care. This surprises N, and he uses her ways of training as an example for how others should treat their Pokemon:
"If every person and Pokémon cared about one another like you two do, I could watch over the future of people and Pokémon without having to liberate Pokémon from people who just use them."
If N, who has a pure heart and can speak with and understand Pokemon, can tell Hilda that her Pokemon care for her and vice versa, that's saying a lot. N is not an easily swayed or impressed person, so this is an indication of what kind of trainer she is - strong, but kind. She was also recognized by Reshiram as a hero along with N and Zekrom, which only proves the point further.
All in all, Hilda has learned a lot on her journey. She's won many battles, lost a few, made new friends both Pokemon and human alike, and she's seen seen Unova in it's entirety. Since the events at N's Castle, not much changed. She still kept Bianca and Cheren as close friends, even battling them now and again to keep up their strength. From her canon point, her new goal is to help Professor Juniper by completing the Pokedex and find the remaining Team Plasma Sages. It's big, but she has no qualms or fears in tackling it. A Pokemon Trainer's work is never finished, after all!
